Apple releases iPhone — my intial thoughts

Apple Inc (as it is now renamed from Apple Computer Inc) release the iPhone. Here is my take on what my initial thoughts are about it.

The Good:

  • It looks sleek and beautiful
  • Thanks for dumping the keypad – I always hated it – as it eats up lot of device real estate
  • The multi-touch technique seems interesting
  • Built in 4GB/8GB memory is a blessing
  • I love widgets… weather, news etc
  • Full web browser — safari — awesome
  • Visual voicemail … thanks steve. Its not a novel idea — but, the stupid motorolas & nokia have been dump enough not to do this for long
  • Wide screen video… is just fantastic
  • The accelerometer is a good idea

The Bad:

  • What No 3G (UMTS,HSDPA)…. where do you live? oh.. yeah USA — its behind the technology curve
  • Its NOT a smartphone — I want open apps & widgets — I dont want to buy them from Apple direct — you typically over prices you stuff
  • Just 8GB memory for video is quite less…. but I am sure this will keep increasing as flash memory prices and size keeps falling
  • What about flash support in the web browser
  • What about dual cameras? … ok may be you dont need it as there is no 3G
  • Only available on Cingular… Mmmm… ok!
  • What about expandable memory … just stick a SD card slot in the device
  • What about Games…. Apple – did you forget this market completely?
  • What about view/edit MS Office documents …

Well whatever is a good and bad about this device. It is the first shot by Apple. I am sure they will come of with a bunch of different phones for different audience … just like the ipod, ipod nano, ipod shuffle. I am sure we will see a updates to this with lot of the bad issues fixed in 2008… till then I will stick with my faithful W810i.
